What is the Australian Technical College - Gladstone Region?
The Australian Technical College - Gladstone Region, a non-government senior secondary college funded by the Australian Government as part of its "Skills for the Future" initiative aimed at addressing recognised nation-wide skills shortages now and in the future. Opened in 2006, the College is one of a network of Australian Technical Colleges across the country that have been established in regions identified as having significant shortages of skilled tradespeople.
Why has the College been established?
The Australian Technical College - Gladstone Region was established as part of an Australian Government initiative to address recognised skills shortages throughout the nation. The Gladstone Region is growing at a rapid pace, placing great demand on the skilled workforce and creating skills gaps that will affect future growth if not remedied. Recognising this, the Australian Government chose the Gladstone Region as one of its priority sites to establish an industry-governed College that is specifically aimed at addressing skills needs now and in the future.
Where is the Australian Technical College - Gladstone Region located?
Our office is located at 1/28 Beckinsale Street, Gladstone, but plans are in place to open a purpose-built facility in Gladstone in the future.
What region does the College cover?
The Australian Technical College - Gladstone Region covers an area from Agnes Water/1770 to the south; Moura to the west; and Mt Larcom to the north and encompasses the Miriam Vale, Banana, Calliope and Gladstone local government areas.
What is the difference between the Australian Technical College and TAFE?
- The Australian Technical College Gladstone Region is a specialist school that provides training for Years 11 and 12 students. All students undertake academic studies relevant to a career in traditional trades and trades-related vocational courses at Certificate III Level, as well as developing employability and entrepreneurial skills. This combination, together with employment as Australian School-based Apprentices, makes it essential that the delivery of services to the students is through flexible delivery arrangements and timetables.
- Industry plays a pivotal role in both leading and supporting the College, particularly through the governance and the employment of the students as an Australian School-based Apprentice.
- The College provides students with the opportunity to pursue traditional trade training, leading to a nationally accredited qualification, as well as complete their senior secondary education. Students at the College have the opportunity to commence an Australian School- based Apprenticeship.
- The Australian Technical Colleges operate autonomously, with a governing body that is made up of local business and industry representatives. Our College has an auspice agreement with Central Queensland Institute of TAFE to deliver a Certificate II in Business and Information Technology to students. Our students also complete their Certificate III in their chosen trade area study modules through TAFE.
What advantage does this program have over traditional pathways to an apprenticeship?
The College's model provides students with a range of possible outcomes. Students will have completed their QCE as well as undertaking a Certificate III level qualification required for their apprenticeship. Participants can enhance their general education with "hands on" training and enjoy the excitement that comes with commencing employment.
